New external hard drive makes easy
connections
August 21, 2007, Thornhill, Ontario – With
all the peripherals and portable devices
available to plug into the personal
computer, it can be difficult to avoid the
crouching, reaching and squinting involved
in the hunt for a free USB or audio port.
Canadian industrial designer Howard Suissa
has designed an external hard drive that
puts those connections right at your
fingertips. Connecting peripherals becomes
simple with the Suissa Computers Shadow, a
750GB hard drive designed to sit on the
desk, equipped with four USB ports and two
audio jacks.
Suissa, president of Suissa Computers, says
while external hard drives are designed to
sit on the desk, they could have greater
functionality. He considered the flood of
peripherals and portable devices, the need
for easy access to additional USB ports, and
an aging population.
“Shadow
is designed for comfort, and provides
convenient ports for all those technologies
we connect to our computers,” says Suissa.
“Consumers are purchasing peripherals to
collect and store memories and experiences.
They therefore require more hard drive space
and more USB connections. As people age,
eyesight and mobility make it difficult to
fiddle with small plugs at the back of a
system, under the desk. Combining these
factors is logical.”
Peripherals and portable devices, including
memory sticks, music, video and camera
devices can demand additional hard drive
space. Suissa Computers Shadow is an
alternative to purchasing a new computer,
increasing the hard drive space of any
desktop computer or laptop by 750GB.
Suissa Computers Shadow hooks up to the
computer with a single USB connection. It
comes ready to plug in with a 750GB hard
drive, four USB 2.0 ports, 1/8” speaker and
microphone jacks, power supply and USB
cable.
Shadow's body is maple and is 25 centimeters
(10 inches) in diameter by 9.5 centimeters
in height (3 ¾ inches). It is available with
a maple or aluminum top side, and a wood
stand allows Shadow to be positioned both
horizontally and vertically. Shadow is also
available as a luxury model, with an art
glass side and an aluminum stand. Shadow
Silver is $715 CDN (aluminum top side),
Shadow Natural is $730 CDN (wood top side),
and Shadow Glass is $875 CDN (luxury
version). The unit will be available for the
holiday season and can be ordered on-line
now for delivery the week of December 10.
